In 1880, a law was passed that made school compulsory for all children between the ages of five and ten. In 1889, the school leaving age was extended to 12. "Chapters 1 to 3". The Mid-Victorian Generation: 1846–1886. pp.9–11.I was born in a hospital with access to national health service GPs (doctors) and chemists and education with school milk and dinners. The Victorians, unless one was middle/upper class did not have these and even if they did knowledge of diseases and illnesses and their treatment was far from the understanding we have today. I'm a nut for British lit, so I was thrilled when I first heard about this book. Goodman has some credibility in this field because she spent months living in re-created Victorian conditions on a farm. Her experience and anecdotes livened up the book, which could get a little dry at times. This book was fascinating. Ruth Goodman set out to explain what life was like for the Victorians, starting from when they got up in the morning until they went to bed at night. There are chapters on getting dressed, using the privy, personal grooming, exercise, meals, school, work, and even sex.

When I was in the South Molton St sec. college (view spoiler) we had a teacher whose real name was Rowena Ponsonby-Smythe and she referred to the vagina etc as "front bottom". Bottom and front bottom. Ridiculous. Why are women supposed to be ashamed of even naming our parts? Adina I recommend to see the movie Hysteria to find our more. it is exactly about this subject and will answer most of your questions ;) Here is the IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1435513/Goodman's enthusiasm for history is as palpable as her contempt for misty-eyed interpretations of it Telegraph

Queen Victoria

In contrast to this, in 1851 the Great Exhibition was held in Crystal Palace in London. It was opened by Queen Victoria and showcased new inventions, technology and exhibits from around the world. The exhibition was open for five months and attracted 6 million visitors. CecilyPetra X wrote: "...A doctor shouldn't be suffering from false modesty. It makes me wonder what her culture was...." During conversations with those who accompany him, he would have his eyes on all of his company ensuring that he sustains his gentleness, mercifulness and tenderness towards all people no matter what they act like or who they are. To many people’s surprise, the gentleman was not meant to think too much of himself and be egotistical. Instead, he chose not to bring himself or matters concerning himself up in the day to day conversation. In fact, even if he was insulted by slander or gossip, this would still not spur him on to defend his reputation by a few rumours.
