About this deal

The Garmin Approach G12 comes with a good amount of golf features – not enough to overwhelm the player but still enough to improve your game. Golf is a popular activity that serves as a competitive sport, business meeting space, social gathering place, and relaxing outdoor activity for millions of people. There is a large market for golf gear and I've been very pleased with the Garmin CT10 club sensors and a connected watch or another device as I play for pleasure and to escape work for a few hours. The G12 is fairly simple to use and it doesn't take much time to get the hang of it. It has a clip to enable you to fasten it to your clothing, golf bag, hat etc and there are a number of useful features, all of which are golf related. There is no step counter or pulse monitor like you will find on the pricier Garmin offerings such as the S62 watch for example, which has a number of smart watch features that make it suitable to wear off the course.

The Garmin Approach G12 does so many things right that it is hard to know where to begin singing its praises. Finally, it’s for anyone that doesn’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a golf GPS device with features that have nothing to do with golf. One immediate thing I noticed and is something I’ve commented on with Garmin’s watches, is the charger. The key design difference between these two devices is that the G10 has a squared display while the G12’s display is rounded.

The Garmin Approach G12 comes with the device, a proprietary charging cable, and a user manual. As someone who’s slightly old school, I appreciate the inclusion of a proper paper manual. The Garmin Approach G12 is a nice accessory that is affordable and automatically captures your gameplay. It is very light and small so it doesn't get in the way of your game at all, but still provides some key information as you walk the course. You can also have the display flipped upside down so that you can keep the G12 mounted on your belt and view the numbers without removing it. This is a thoughtful small touch that helps you stay focused on the game. Since those humble beginnings, our endeavour has blossomed into a robust and trusted online retailer, representing the leading brands in the golf industry. We take immense pride in being your go-to destination for all things golf!Welcome to The Golf Shop Online, where our passion for golf drives us to provide you with an exceptional shopping experience! Also: Garmin MARQ Golfer review: Virtual caddie contained in a luxurious and powerful GPS sports watch Even though the G12 is small, the numbers on its screen are large and easy to read. The screen is 23mm x 23mm, with a resolution of 176×176 pixels. I can easily see my yardages without resorting to my reading glasses (which is more than I can say about a couple of other GPS units I own). The Garmin Approach G12 tells me that it’s 105 to the center of the green on the thirteenth at Washtenaw Golf Club.

If you’re in the market for this type of device? It’s accurate, easy to use, and does exactly what you’d expect it to do. A useful feature of the G12 that I find invaluable in any Garmin device I’ve used is the ‘last shot’ function. On some devices this is done automatically and as soon as you hit a shot and start walking the device will measure how many yards you have travelled until you reach your ball. On the S12 and G12 however you need to activate this feature manually. You can charge your G12 with any USB port, and it’s a good idea to do so before your first round. You can also sync it to the Garmin app for course updates. Garmin’s app is excellent, and the syncing takes less than a minute.

You can’t pair it with any apps and you can’t connect it to your smartphone in any way (like Bluetooth). The Garmin Approach G12 would be a great device for any golfer looking to be more competitive at pretty much any course. It provides in depth course information like your distance from key course hazards and layups. Whether or not you choose the G12, remember that any golf GPS device you buy should be able to improve your performance on a wide variety of courses. The G12 isn't a watch and it isn't smart. It's all about golf, nothing else. Unlike GPS watches, this is a device you keep in your golf bag and it only comes out when you're playing. It's waterproof too so there's no need to worry about it when you're playing in a downpour. It has many of the same golf features like hazard, layup and dogleg distancing, a digital scorecard and green view with manual pin positioning. There are a couple of pretty big differences, though. For one thing the S12 is not tournament legal.

Lastly, the G12 has slightly better screen resolution than it’s predecessor with 175 x 175 pixel display. The G12 can last up to 30 hours in golf GPS mode as opposed to the estimated 15 hour lifespan of the G10 battery. After the round, you can select “Scorecard” from the menu and go through each of the holes, editing as necessary.
