About this deal

I don’t appreciate the bait-and-switch marketing. I get that they’re a small distillery in New York, but if you’re going to market yourself as a locally produced Brooklyn, NY spirit then you should probably do a little more than add a splash of water from Poughkeepsie. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. This, again, was pretty great. The only reason it’s slightly lower today is that it was only classic and not that little bit extra like the next few on the list. 5. 2021 Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch — Taste 5 Four Roses

I have to admit that having had my fair share of New York water over the years, I knew going in that it has a unique quality that would factor into this pour. I was pleased to find that being the case, as well as that it shines as part of the blend. Rather than being a minus in all of the flavor, it contributes some of its own; having heard Lisa speak about how it particularly plays well with the cherry note found in Widow Jane’s bourbons, I’m inclined to agree as it substitutes a dark cloying aspect for a light freshness that sets it apart. As for the rest, there was so little distance between them quality-wise. Another day, another lineup, and any one of these bottles could have ended up on top. But not today.Unlike high rye bourbons, Eagle Rare bourbon lives up to its name because of its distinctive taste experience and pleasing tasting notes.

Batch / Bottle / Date — We must note that the bottle sampled for this review was from Batch #308, bottled in 2021. The term ‘small batch bourbon’ is not regulated by the TTB. Some brands may dump hundreds or thousands of barrels for each batch and still use that term on the label. But Widow Jane states it is comprised of 5-barrel batches. That’s an extremely small batch. Because only 5 barrels of bourbon are dumped, each batch will have slightly different characteristics based on the unique flavor profile of each component whiskey in the blend. Aged for ten years, every bottle of this bold, rich, 100 proof bourbon lists the bottle number and when the whiskey was bottled. From there, she transitioned to brandy while working with the Huber family at Starlight Distillery, before her work as a distilling consultant landed her a dinner with spirits conglomerate Samson & Surrey’s CEO Robert Furniss-Roe. After initially rebuffing his offer out of an abundance of admiration for what the Hubers were doing in Indiana, Lisa simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity to take Furniss-Roe’s place as President of Widow Jane along with the role of Head Blender and, eventually, Head Distiller. The scent was squarely in traditional bourbon territory, with its candy corn and caramel, but rounded out with pleasantly spicy, herbal notes and cedar. The palate was much sweeter than the nose let on, while staying well inside the standard bourbon profile boundaries, and that herbal and spicy aspect took on a lighter touch. The woody side evolved from cedar to oak as it went from nose to tongue. The mildly spicy finish lingered for a respectable period. The whiskey is a dark amber color with an almost syrupy texture, which looks incredibly appealing. The smell of the spirit is spot-on for a typical standard bourbon, with notes of toffee caramel and vanilla. Overall the flavors are a mix of caramel, dried berries, dates, toasted oak, tobacco, cinnamon, clove, and chocolate. It tastes like an Armagnac finished bourbon, even though it is not. The Widow Jane Bourbon is a mix of many flavors and is well-balanced. Finish In 2018, after a litigious battle between Preston and potential buyers, the Widow Jane brand was acquired by Samson & Surrey — a drinks marketing support and consulting firm based in Miami, Florida. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The great thing about the Widow Jane whiskey is that it smells like an Armagnac or sherry finished but is not, which confused me to a large extent. After fermentation and distillation of the mash bill, it is aged in new charred oak barrels for a decade to develop the great tasting notes of the straight bourbon whiskey. The company originally started as an importer of cacao beans and a manufacturer of chocolate in Brooklyn, NY. Starting in 2012, they decided to branch out into the production of spirits as well, developing the Widow Jane brand. The barrel-proof bourbon is aged in new charred oak barrels to develop the sweet caramel, dark chocolate, orange peel, and toasted marshmallows of the bourbon. Generally speaking, bourbon hits a sweet spot around ten years old. It’s sort of a demarcation point between the cheaper, small-batch, bottled-in-bond stuff and the single barrels, unicorns, and super old stuff (think 20-plus years). Bourbon whiskeys around ten years old (or maybe a couple of years older) are a little more expensive, a little more refined, and a little more extra but they’re not always harder to find. The nose becomes better after swirling. My nose had a smell of dense caramel and nutty prunes, berries, cherries, and grapes as if it was a sherry finished, freshly peeled ginger, vanilla, orange, dark chocolate, oak, Nutella, and tobacco. The nose varies between bright, dark, fruity, and herbal notes. Palate

Eagle Rare 10-year bourbon is carefully aged and masterfully crafted for no less than ten years. It has a complex aroma and smooth lingering taste that will make you want another glass. This year’s LE Small Batch is a blend of four bourbons. Four Roses is renowned for its ten distinct recipes with two mash bills and five yeast strains. This whiskey marries four of those recipes with two from Mash B (very high rye) and two from Mash Bill E (high rye). The yeasts at play are “delicate fruit,”“spice essence,” and “floral essence.” The barrels ranged from 12 to 16 years old, making this a fairly old bourbon, all things considered. This is where things get hard … already. This was pretty freaking good. It was interesting. But something had to be last and there was a pretty big gap between this and number one, two, and three. However, the gap between this and numbers eight through four is pretty much paper-thin. (tie) 8. Orphan Barrel Copper Tongue Aged 16 Years — Taste 4 Diageo

There are also more ripe fruit flavors dancing on the palate, as well. All in all a decent sipper. That being said, the overall fruitiness of this bourbon isn’t exactly what I’m looking for in a sipping whiskey. Taste 6: Christopher Osburn Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. The bitter ginger is balanced nicely by the sweetness of the toffee and caramel flavors. But the problem here is that it might be too sweet. The liquor on its own is very sweet with the flavors within, and adding a bit of sugar in the ginger beer into the drink doesn’t help the situation.
