About this deal

She’s the kind of person who’s really fun to be around, but there’s something about her that just seems a bit…unsteady. Because the author is a trans woman herself, she is able to depict with nuance and realism the detailed physical and emotional experience of Amanda’s transition. Layla is the mother hen of the group, constantly doling out encouragement and advice, whether it’s regarding Amanda’s choice of bra for gym or the dress she should wear to prom.

No-one knows Andrew Hardy there so Amanda can be herself without necessarily being terrified that she will be attacked by transphobic bullies. It's aspects like this that enable you to tell that it's a debut novel, but they are also factors that can be improved with more writing experience and time, so I'm definitely more understanding of these faults. That’s not to say that other trans people won’t find it validating or that this is not a good book or an important one. If I Was Your Girl should be recommended to anybody and everybody who needs an introduction into LGBTQ literature and is a good read for anybody who just likes YA romance stories.I also liked the fact that Amanda’s dad wasn’t totally one-dimensional, although initially he seemed like a stereotype. Amanda and Grant then go to a Halloween party where their Star Wars themed costumes both have masks that cover their faces. The way they learned to relate to one another; how he moved to a place of acceptance and began to embrace her as his daughter, was really lovely. To conclude, I utterly adored this story and its characters but I would live to know what happens next with Amanda and Grant!

So how does the school administration not notice this issue until the gym teacher randomly chances upon them hanging out when they should be in class? Any images belonging to the author should be regarded in the same way as the previously mentioned written content and should not be used without permission. If I Was Your Girl is the type of book you read and want to immediately share, because it's too important to keep to yourself.MEREDITH RUSSO lives in Brooklyn with her cat Shadow and probably more books than is responsible for a New York apartment. And I have an immense crush on her southern accent; I think she might be one of the reasons I fell for this so hard. Moving to a new school, for any reason, in one’s senior year can be tough, especially when that school is in a different town and involves living with a dad you haven’t seen in six years.

I still would have liked a slightly more hopeful ending for the romance – maybe they wouldn’t have been together forever but I’d have liked to see them together at the end of the book at least. The novel ends as Amanda and Grant discuss the future of their relationship, unsure of what it will be. A fantastic addition to contemporary YA and also LGBTQIA YA and I’ll be looking out for Meredith Russo’s next book in future. I’ll admit that this is a flawed book, and for a while after I started reading it I wasn’t overly enamored with it. I imagined how I must look to him, and my mind leaped to fill in all the worst things I had ever felt about myself. At first the accent used by Ms Mounts was a surprise but it makes the story more real since it matches the area of USA where the story is set. She wants to share something so important about herself with these people who are so important to her, but she's so terrified about how they will react. Meredith Russo's award-winning, big-hearted nove l If I Was Your Girl is about being seen for who you really are, with a love story you can't help but root for! It also makes sense for the intended young adult readers who are less familiar with these tropes anyway. Please tell your families about this one and then give me some recommendations for what intermediate LGBTQ literature would be!
