About this deal

Over 20 years of being in the industry has allowed us to bring a product to the market that we can truly say is the best. Feed 6 chickens for 10 days with the Standard chicken feeder (9kg of feed), or feed 20 chickens for 6 days (or 10 chickens for 12 days) with the Large chicken feeder (18kg of feed). It literally took 5 seconds before one of them ran over, stepped on the plate and the lid on the feed lifted.

This really spooked them at first as you can see from the photo to the right and they would go to feed, step on the plate and then get startled by the movement. The standard feeder that was used in this test holds 9Kg which is a little under half a sack of feed and can feed half a dozen chickens for 10 days. and all the hens are still happily using it - not a hint of being scared at all, they are all confidently hopping on and off the feeder.

I'm already wondering if there is some way of affixing a rubber strip to the lid to deaden the clanging sound? For very light birds or bantams which are too light for the feeder, it is very easy to adjust the feeder by putting a small weight on the tread plate. One house has a Grandpa’s Feeder that feeds 6 hens, 6 bantams, and 4-6 pheasants, yes the pheasants have learnt to open the feeder. Several of the Grandpa feeder complaints covered the fact that mice can still get into the feeder, from an ill fitting lid or because of the lack of any spring loading on the door.

The feeder doesn’t have an lip either so they had to add a wire grid in an attempt to stop the birds from raking feed out onto the ground, unsuccessfully according to one review. Now, let it be known that these three hens are quite bright and I have no doubt they will learn within a week or two, how to work this feeding machine. I made my own PVC feeders and have been happy with their performance, besides, I believed treadle-style feeders were designed primarily to keep rodents out of the feed and I didn’t have a problem with rodents- or so I believed.

There is a training period that allows the birds to become accustomed to the operation of the feeder, but it requires no effort on the part of the chicken-keeper. compared to the upright treadle feeders, but they are much better made - definitely worth the money. I find the powdered feed remnants always sit at the bottom front of the feeder which causes the rest to not fall down as intended. We haven't had them poo on any other part of the feeder, but I suppose they might perch on the roof of the hopper. My birds did take a little longer than normal but they soon realised that stepping on the treadle plate meant food and they were quite happy to walk over, step on the treadle and eat when they were hungry.
